Fluvastatin, a synthetic cholesterol-lowering agent, is a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, which is responsible for the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a precursor of sterols, including cholesterol. It is used in the treatment of primary hypercholesterolaemia and mixed hyperlipidaemia as an adjunct to diet when response to diet and other non-pharmacological treatments is inadequate. Fluvastatin SR is also indicated in patients with coronary heart disease for the secondary prevention of coronary events.
