Actavis Ltd., located in Bulebel, has recently launched the first to market generic of Atorvastatin (Atacor) on the Maltese market, taking the total portfolio of products to twenty-eight. The portfolio is set to increase further in 2008, confirming Actavis as the leading generic pharmaceutical company in Malta.

Atorvastatin is a selective, competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase. Atorvastatin lowers blood cholesterol and lipoproteins by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver. Atorvastatin also increases the number of hepatic LDL receptors on the cell surface in the liver, which results in increased uptake and catabolism of LDL.
