Marsa, Malta, 13 October 2011 ― “I personally thank Actavis on behalf of the Libyan people for this generous offer and the Maltese government for making this shipment possible. Malta has always been an exemplary neighbouring country to Libya. Malta never refused to offer support to the Libyan people and is continuing to show solidarity in this moment of crises and difficulty” said Dr. Mohammed Sayeh, Senior Member of the National Transitional Council of Libya at a press conference held at the Humanitarian Aid Hub in Marsa today.
In a statement from Zug Switzerland, Actavis CEO, Dr Claudio Albrecht stated, “We know Libya is faced with shortages of essential supplies. Actavis is one of the world’s largest generic pharmaceutical companies and takes its social responsibility very seriously. That is why Actavis donates EUR2M worth of medicines to Libya now. The goods will leave Malta on Sunday and arrive in Tripoli during next week.” He emphasized the role of the Maltese government in this donation. “Without the Malta’s help in coordinating this, the donation wouldn’t have been possible in this short period of time.”
Speaking at the Civil Protection Departments' humanitarian aid stores in Marsa, Daniel Vella Friggieri, Actavis Regional Director for Africa, has outlined the long co-operation and business ventures between Malta and Libya. “It is now more important than ever, to show solidarity with the Libyan people in these difficult times where human lives are being sacrificed to achieve freedom. Actavis has the social responsibility to give a helping hand in such situations by seeking to the needs of the Libyan people.” Mr Vella Friggieri said that 20 per cent of the products being sent were manufactured in Malta.
In total, 170 pallets of urgent medicines are on their way from Malta to Tripoli. The donation includes cardiology, anti-infective, pain management and gastrointestinal products amongst others collected from a number of European markets. Actavis‘ donation will be sent to the Medical Supply Organisation within the Ministry of Health in Libya, for distribution to all affected areas within the country.
Mr. Vella Friggieri extended his gratitude to all the people helping in this initiative and emphasized that without their help, this humanitatian aid could not be possible. Present for the press conference where the Hon Minister of Health, Dr. Joe Cassar, Mr. Patrick Murgo, Director of the Civil Protection Department, Dr. Mohammed Sayeh and Mr. Sergio Vella, Managing Director of Actavis Ltd.
